Design story
The workshop has stood empty for a generation. Its brick shell and sawtooth roofs remain sound, and the proposal keeps almost all of them.
A new steel frame stands inside the old walls, carrying three long studio floors. The north-facing sawtooth glazing is repaired rather than replaced, so the studios are washed in even light all day.
The brick is limewashed and left to breathe. At the centre of the building, one bay is left open from floor to roof, and a single tree grows where the loom line once ran.
